A Savannah Strong Block Party will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in Copperas Cove to benefit 16-year-old Savannah Lewis and her struggle with cancer.
Since the end of November, a number of events have been organized by the community to uplift spirits. From a collective decoration for the holidays by community volunteers at her home in Copperas Cove, to a candlelight vigil and a parade of Jeeps that brought people from out of the state, Lewis has motivated people from all over with her story.
The block party is one such event, organized by Simmonette Barnes, a neighbor of Lewis that became aware of her story a few weeks ago.
“I felt like maybe I should do something if I could,” Barnes said.
The block party will feature food donated by Dam Sandwiches and Bits N Bites Bakery, as well as other local vendors, for visitors to enjoy and pay what they can towards donations.
A number of children’s activities such as visits with Santa, rides, bounce houses, and a DJ will be on-hand throughout the day.
Donated gift baskets from sponsors and benefactors will be raffled off to raise money for the Lewis family and the expenses that come with dealing for an ill child, said Barnes.
“I’m very surprised and overwhelmed in the outpouring of help for this event,” she said.
The block party is open to the public and will be at Northpointe Church at 1115 N. Main St., Copperas Cove.
